The topic of expandable memory for iphone has been intense since the first iphone model was released years ago. It was initially thought (or hoped) that Apple would allow memory expansion capabilities, as even 32gig iphones can get filled up quickly with music, video and other multi-media files. And while lots of other cell phones allow you to upgrade their stock storage to add more music and large files by adding expandable memory chips, it doesn’t appear that we’re going to see expandable memory in the iphone any time soon.

You’re probably asking yourself, why would Apple restrict such a simple thing as allowing an iphone owner to add additional memory. Some will argue it’s a cost measure on Apple’s part. In order to expand the memory of a mobile phone, a manufacturer generally needs to include a slot for removable storage media like an SD Card or Memory Stick. Unfortunately, as we now know, the iPhone has no such slot for adding these popular types of expandable memory. It could be that Apple just doesn’t want to spend the extra cost of adding these expandable slots.

Others argue that it’s merely and attempt on the part of Apple to make their phone obsolete after a certain period of time, forcing you to purchase a new iPhone. Let’s face it, 32Gig’s is quite a bit of memory, but when you start stocking up your iTunes account with music and video, 32Gig’s can start to go quickly. The byproduct of this is that your iPhone will get bogged down and not run a quickly as it originally did. Combine the lack of additional storage space with a slow phone, and it’s enough to drive anyone to buy something with more memory. It can be even more difficult for those owners of high capacity iPods, and seeing as there are no iPhones with that amount of storage capacity, downgrading to even16 or 32gb can be a big disappointment.

There is a software solution for iphone memory expansion, but for now we’ll have to wait for an expandable memory slot to be added to the iphone in a future release. We’ll stay on top of it and report any news regarding changes to the iphone memory configuration.
